A Wedding Weekend in Los Olivos at The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern

Makena and Eric’s Los Olivos wedding weekend was a beautiful blend of California wine country charm, effortless elegance, incredible food, and a guest experience designed around being together. Six years ago, Makena and Eric met in San Francisco after randomly running into each other at Anina in Hayes Valley. Last December, Eric proposed at one of their favorite wineries in Sonoma, Scribe. Makena thought they were simply enjoying a wine tasting until Eric surprised her by announcing they were going to have a picnic and ordering sparkling wine.

For their wedding, Makena and Eric wanted more than a beautiful wedding day. They wanted a full wedding weekend in Los Olivos that felt intentional, welcoming, and centered around the people they love.

A Welcome Dinner Designed for Gathering

The wedding weekend began with a welcome dinner at Fess Parker Wine Country Inn, Nella Kitchen and Bar, surrounded by gardens and the relaxed beauty of Los Olivos. The evening was intentionally designed to feel social and effortless. Instead of assigning everyone to a traditional seated dinner, the space featured cocktail tables and a mix of bistro-style tables and seating, encouraging guests to move throughout the garden, grab a drink, find a familiar face, and catch up. The setup was all about creating opportunities for connection.

Food was part of the experience, too. A pinsa station gave guests the opportunity to enjoy freshly prepared pinsa throughout the evening, keeping the meal relaxed and interactive. And then there was the gelato cart, a fun, unexpected touch that gave everyone another reason to wander, linger, and enjoy the evening.

The result was a welcome dinner that felt like the perfect beginning to Makena and Eric’s wedding weekend: beautiful without feeling formal, elevated without feeling fussy, and designed around bringing people together.

A Wedding Day at The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern

The following day, the celebration continued at The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern in Los Olivos, where we brought their vision of a simple, elegant California wine country wedding to life. Beautiful architecture, greenery, flowering hedges, open lawns, and warm California sunshine created a natural backdrop that felt both beautiful and completely at home in Los Olivos.

Their design vision was simple, fresh, and elegant, with details chosen to complement rather than compete with the setting. There was no traditional wedding party, allowing the day to feel personal and unhurried. Before the ceremony, Makena and Eric shared a first look and private vows, creating a quiet moment together before stepping into the celebration with their guests. It was one of those moments that reminded us that even on a wedding day filled with people, music, food, and beautiful details, making room for the two of you to simply be together matters.

A California Wine Country Ceremony

The ceremony was intimate and romantic, with a harpist providing live music as guests gathered. The atmosphere felt effortlessly California, beautiful without being overly styled.

Cocktails, Conversation & California Sunshine

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktails, including two signature drinks created for the couple: a Blackberry Smash with bourbon, lemon, blackberry, and mint, and a Santa Ynez Spritz with vodka, strawberry basil cordial, lemon, soda water, and Thai basil. An Aperol Spritz was also available for a bright, refreshing option.

The cocktail hour gave everyone another opportunity to move through the property, visit with friends and family, and enjoy the relaxed pace of the day. That sense of movement and connection was a thread throughout the entire wedding weekend — from the welcome dinner to cocktail hour and into the reception.

Dinner Under the California Sky

For the reception, long tables stretched across the lawn, creating a sense of one long, beautiful gathering rather than a series of separate tables. The overall design wasn't about filling every space with decor. It was about choosing the right details and letting the setting shine.

Music, Dancing & a Night to Remember

Once dinner gave way to dancing, the energy shifted. The reception featured a DJ alongside live saxophone and guitar, bringing an elevated live-music element to the evening and keeping the dance floor moving. The combination of live instrumentation and DJ kept the celebration feeling dynamic while still fitting the relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere of the day.

And then there was the cake, a long, floral-adorned beauty that was every bit as pretty as it was delicious. Simple, romantic, and perfectly on theme.

One of our favorite things about Makena and Eric’s wedding was that the design was never just about how the wedding looked. It was about how the wedding felt. The welcome dinner encouraged guests to wander and reconnect. The first look and private vows created space for Makena and Eric to slow down and be together. Long tables brought everyone together for dinner. Live music added energy to the celebration. And thoughtful food and cocktail experiences gave guests plenty of reasons to linger. Every decision supported the same goal: creating a wedding that felt easy, personal, beautiful, and full of connection.

From a chance meeting at a bar in San Francisco to a surprise proposal at their favorite Sonoma winery, Makena and Eric’s story has always been connected to California. Their wedding weekend brought that story full circle. Set in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, their celebration at The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern was everything they envisioned, elegant but relaxed, thoughtfully designed but never overdone, and centered around the people they love. It was a weekend of garden gatherings, California sunshine, cocktails, incredible food, candlelit dinners, live music, and the kind of moments that happen when you give people the time and space to simply be together.

Planning a wedding that feels this intentional starts long before the wedding day. If you’re dreaming of a celebration that feels elevated, effortless, and completely your own, I’d love to help bring it to life.
